Doing The Twist

Improper installation or physical tampering can create severe, hidden electrical faults inside stairwell conduits. On a recent callout in an Edinburgh tenement, we investigated a short circuit caused by someone physically twisting an alloy back box during a previous repair or adjustment.
Twisting the back box caused the internal conductors inside the conduit to tangle, strain, and snap, resulting in stripped insulation and a direct short circuit. To safely resolve the fault and restore light to the stairwell, we:
Isolated power to the circuit and disconnected the damaged wiring.
Cut away the snapped and tangled cables back to the junction box.
Pulled fresh wiring through the conduit, reconnected the fitting, and replaced the lamps to restore full functionality.
