Why Upgrade? Why Some Stair Lighting Units Just Aren't Fit for Purpose

When it comes to communal stairwell lighting, brightness, efficiency, and reliability are essential for safety. Unfortunately, we recently came across a set-up where a customer had rectangular bulkheads installed alongside a basic 7-day timer.

The issue? Those older bulkheads only produced a dim 285 lumens—far too weak to safely illuminate a multi-story Edinburgh tenement stair. On top of that, standard 7-day timers require constant manual adjustments throughout the year as daylight hours change, often leaving residents in the dark or wasting electricity during daylight.

To fix this, we upgraded the entire system:

• Polo LED Bulkheads: We replaced the old units with new polo LED bulkheads that output around 1,300 lumens. This dramatically brightens the stairwell, improving visibility and safety while keeping energy consumption low.

• Astronomical Timer Installation: We swapped out the old manual clock for an astronomical timer. These smart timeclocks automatically track Edinburgh's exact sunrise and sunset times throughout the year and adjust seamlessly for British Summer Time (BST), so your lights are only on when you actually need them.
